Frequently Asked Questions

What is the APC Smart-UPS used for?

The APC Smart-UPS is a single-phase UPS line used to protect servers, network closets, switches, routers, and edge IT equipment from about 0.5 to 20 kVA. It provides battery backup, pure sine-wave output, and automatic voltage regulation, with optional remote monitoring, making it the most widely deployed network-grade single-phase UPS.

What is the difference between Smart-UPS and Smart-UPS Online (SRT)?

Standard Smart-UPS models are line-interactive, correcting common power problems and switching to battery during an outage, which suits most server-room loads. Smart-UPS Online (SRT) uses double conversion to continuously regenerate clean power with zero transfer time, which is better for highly sensitive or critical equipment. Comp-Utility recommends the topology based on your load sensitivity.

What are the Smart-UPS Ultra and Modular Ultra models?

Smart-UPS Ultra and Modular Ultra are lithium-ion models that pack more power into a smaller, lighter footprint with much longer battery life than VRLA equivalents, including compact 1U options. Modular Ultra adds hot-swappable power and battery modules for internal N+1 redundancy. They are ideal for edge, space-constrained racks, and distributed IT.

Do Smart-UPS systems support lithium-ion batteries?

Yes. Several Smart-UPS lines, including the Ultra, Modular Ultra, and Smart-UPS Li-Ion models, use lithium-ion batteries that deliver roughly three times the service life of VRLA, a smaller footprint, faster recharge, and tolerance of higher temperatures. This lowers total cost of ownership for distributed deployments.

How do I size a Smart-UPS for my equipment?

Sizing is based on the connected load in watts or VA and the runtime you need before shutdown, generator start, or restored power. Allow headroom for growth and account for power factor. Comp-Utility calculates the load, recommends the model and runtime, and can add extended battery packs where longer backup is required.

Can I monitor Smart-UPS remotely?

Yes. Smart-UPS models support APC SmartConnect cloud monitoring or a network management card for SNMP and remote management, giving visibility into status, load, and battery health. This supports proactive battery replacement and integrates with DCIM. Comp-Utility can deploy units with monitoring configured for your environment.

Who supplies and services Smart-UPS in Central Texas?

Comp-Utility, a long-standing Schneider Electric distribution partner, supplies, deploys, and services APC Smart-UPS across Central Texas, including battery testing and replacement and fleet support. Call (512) 346-0999 or email sales@comp-utility.com to source units or set up battery service.

How often should Smart-UPS batteries be replaced?

VRLA Smart-UPS batteries typically last three to five years, while lithium-ion models last significantly longer. Runtime that falls short of rating or a battery-replacement indicator signals it is time. For fleets, scheduled testing and replacement prevent surprise failures. Comp-Utility manages battery service across distributed Smart-UPS deployments.

My UPS is in alarm, what do I do?

Call Comp-Utility right away at (512) 346-0999, and have the unit's model and serial number ready along with any alarm codes or messages shown on the UPS display. A unit in alarm can indicate a battery, load, or power-path issue that needs prompt attention. Because we maintain a large base of units under contract with the major UPS manufacturers, we can escalate directly to the right factory resources and coordinate service faster and more directly than a single end user calling general support, often getting you answers and a technician on site sooner.
