Home AI Server Room Equipment: Power, Cooling, Racks, and Backup
A home AI server room needs the same building blocks as a commercial data center, scaled to a house: electrical distribution with dedicated 240 V circuits, an online UPS, dedicated cooling, server racks with rack PDUs, structured cabling, and a standby generator or battery backup. Comp-Utility supplies, installs, and maintains this equipment as a value-added reseller of manufacturers including Eaton, Schneider Electric, Vertiv, and Generac, sized for typical residential loads of 10 to 50 kW.

What We Provide

For smaller rooms, an all-in-one enclosure integrates the rack, cooling, power, and monitoring in one cabinet.
Learn moreTurnkey Buildout
We install the equipment as part of a complete electrical and mechanical buildout under one contract.
Learn morePower
Distribution and UPS Sized for GPU Servers
Power starts at a dedicated subpanel with 240 V circuits and receptacles matched to the server power supplies. In the rack, metered or switched 240 V rack PDUs distribute power to each server and show how much load each circuit is carrying.
An online double-conversion UPS, such as the Eaton 9PX, Vertiv Liebert GXT5, or APC Smart-UPS, conditions the power and carries the servers through interruptions. Larger rooms may use several units or a larger UPS, sized to the load and the runtime needed to reach generator power.

Cooling
Dedicated Cooling Matched to the Heat Load
Each kilowatt of IT load produces about 3,412 BTU per hour of heat, so a 10 to 50 kW room needs roughly 3 to 14 tons of dedicated cooling. Depending on the room, that can be ductless split systems or precision cooling built for continuous duty, with a redundant unit so one failure does not shut the room down.
For the densest GPU servers, in-row or liquid cooling brings the cooling closer to the heat. Comp-Utility sizes and selects the cooling together with the power so both scale as you add hardware.

Backup
Whole-Home Standby Generators and Battery Tie-Ins
For long outages, a whole-home standby generator with an automatic transfer switch keeps the server room and the rest of the house running. Generac is one of our manufacturer partners, and we size the generator to the combined home and server load.
Battery storage tie-ins add another layer of ride-through. The UPS covers the seconds before the generator or batteries take over, so the servers never see the interruption.

Frequently Asked Questions
What equipment do I need for a home AI server room?
A home AI server room needs electrical distribution with dedicated 240 V circuits, an online UPS, dedicated cooling, server racks with rack PDUs, structured cabling, and longer-duration backup from a standby generator or battery storage. Monitoring for temperature, humidity, leaks, and power rounds it out. Comp-Utility supplies, installs, and maintains all of it, sized for typical residential loads of 10 to 50 kW.
What kind of UPS is best for a home AI server?
An online double-conversion UPS is the best fit for AI servers. It continuously regenerates clean power, so the servers see no transfer gap when the utility fails. Single-phase models such as the Eaton 9PX, Vertiv Liebert GXT5, and APC Smart-UPS suit most home rooms. Comp-Utility sizes the UPS to your load and pairs it with a generator or batteries.
How big a UPS do I need for a home AI server room?
Size the UPS to the maximum power draw of the protected equipment, plus headroom for growth, and choose battery runtime based on what happens after the utility fails. With a standby generator, the UPS only needs minutes of runtime to bridge the transfer. Without one, it needs enough runtime to finish work or shut down cleanly. Comp-Utility calculates both for your hardware.
What rack PDU should I use for GPU servers at home?
GPU servers usually run best on 240 V, so choose a 240 V rack PDU with outlet types that match your server power supplies and enough capacity for the rack's full load. Metered PDUs show the load on each circuit, and switched PDUs add remote outlet control for rebooting hardware. Comp-Utility matches the PDUs to the circuits we install.
What cooling equipment works for a server room in a house?
Dedicated cooling separate from the home's central air. Depending on the room and load, that can be ductless split systems or precision cooling designed for continuous duty, typically with a redundant unit. Each kilowatt of IT load needs about 3,412 BTU per hour of cooling. The densest GPU servers may call for in-row or liquid cooling.
Should I use an all-in-one enclosure instead of building out a room?
For smaller deployments it can be a good fit. An all-in-one enclosure such as the RakworX EdgeEasy integrates the rack, cooling, power distribution, and monitoring in one prefabricated cabinet from 1 kW to 20 kW, and needs no room buildout. Larger loads or plans for growth usually favor a dedicated room. Comp-Utility helps you compare both approaches for your home.
Can a whole-home standby generator run my AI servers?
Yes, when it is sized for the combined load of the house and the server room. A whole-home standby generator with an automatic transfer switch starts on its own when the utility fails, and the UPS carries the servers through the seconds before it takes over. Generac is one of Comp-Utility's manufacturer partners, and we size and install the generator with the room.
Can I use battery storage to back up a home server room?
Yes. Comp-Utility offers battery storage tie-ins that add ride-through capacity for the server room, alone or alongside a standby generator. Batteries respond instantly and run silently, while a generator provides long runtime on fuel. The right combination depends on how long you need to stay online and the size of the load.
Do you supply the servers and GPUs?
Comp-Utility supplies and installs the infrastructure the servers run on: power, cooling, backup, racks, PDUs, and cabling. For the servers, GPUs, networking, and AI software, we work with IT managed service providers we partner with regularly, or with your own IT team, so the infrastructure and the IT are planned together as one project.
