Concept to Commissioning

One Engineer-Owned Team for the Whole Build

Design-build means one team owns the outcome. Our engineers develop the basis of design, size power and cooling to your load and redundancy targets, and carry the project through installation and commissioning without handoffs between separate firms.

That continuity is how nothing falls through the cracks between the people who plan a facility and the people who build it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides data center design-build in Central Texas?

Comp-Utility provides data center design-build across Central Texas from its Austin headquarters. Owned and operated by engineers since 1992, with licensed Texas Professional Engineers on staff, the company designs, installs, and commissions power and cooling infrastructure as one turnkey partner. Call (512) 346-0999 or email sales@comp-utility.com to discuss a project.

What is the difference between design-build and design-bid-build?

In design-build, one team handles both design and construction, which improves coordination, speeds delivery, and gives you a single point of accountability. In design-bid-build, design and construction are contracted separately, which can add handoffs and finger-pointing. For mission-critical infrastructure, design-build often reduces risk because the people who plan the systems also build and commission them.

Do you design to Uptime Institute tier ratings?

Yes. We design to your target availability, whether that aligns with Uptime Institute Tier II, III, or higher, by engineering the appropriate redundancy (such as N+1 or 2N) into power and cooling paths. We also reference TIA-942 for facility infrastructure. We translate your uptime goal into a concrete electrical and mechanical design.

Can you retrofit an existing building into a data center?

Yes. We assess the existing electrical service, structure, and mechanical systems, then engineer the power, cooling, flooring, and cabling needed to convert the space. Retrofits require careful capacity and redundancy planning around existing constraints. Our engineers develop a feasible design and our crews execute it, all under one contract.

How do you size power and cooling for a new data center?

Sizing starts with the IT load in kW, rack density, redundancy target, and growth plan. From there we calculate UPS and generator capacity, cooling tons, distribution, and battery runtime, and model for future expansion. Our engineers build the one-line and mechanical design so the facility is right-sized for today and scalable for tomorrow.

Do you handle permitting and utility coordination in Texas?

Yes. We coordinate the electrical design with your utility for service capacity and handle the engineering documentation required for permitting. Our licensed Texas Professional Engineers stamp the designs where required. We manage these steps as part of the turnkey project so you are not coordinating multiple parties yourself.

What areas of Central Texas do you serve?

We serve the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown area and surrounding Central Texas MSAs, including Killeen-Temple, Waco, San Marcos, and Bryan-College Station. Our Austin headquarters is the base for design-build projects across the region.

Can you maintain the facility after it is built?

Yes. Comp-Utility provides ongoing preventative maintenance, battery service, generator and ATS testing, and 24/7 emergency response, and can deploy DCIM for monitoring. Building and maintaining the facility with the same partner means the team that knows your systems best is the one keeping them running.
