Applications Engineer

Austin, Texas (on-site, with Central Texas travel)Full-time

Role Overview

Comp-Utility is seeking an Applications Engineer to serve as the technical bridge between our customers and our field service teams. This client-facing role is responsible for visiting customer sites, evaluating existing power and cooling infrastructure, and developing practical, cost-effective solutions that keep critical facilities running.

Our work centers on UPS systems, power distribution, and precision cooling, mostly in the sub-500 kVA range, across data centers, healthcare, government, broadcast, and commercial facilities. The right candidate is someone who enjoys being on-site, can quickly understand how a facility is built and where it is vulnerable, and looks for creative, reliable, and economic ways to solve a problem.

As an early hire on a growing team, this individual will work closely with Company leadership and directly influence which projects we win and how well we deliver them. Compensation includes a base salary plus a performance bonus tied to the projects you help develop and deliver.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct site visits and walkthroughs to assess existing UPS, power distribution, and cooling equipment, including electrical rooms, server rooms, and data centers.
  • Take accurate inventory of installed equipment, site conditions, and constraints, and identify the materials, labor, and equipment required to deliver a solution.
  • Document requirements in clear scopes of work, site reports, photos, and one-line sketches, and relay them to our service crews so jobs are executed within an allotted timeline and budget.
  • Develop creative, value-driven solutions that reduce customer cost and downtime, such as right-sizing equipment, extending the life of existing assets, or phasing work to fit budgets.
  • Support the sales and quoting process by providing technical input on pricing, equipment selection, and project scope.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for customers before, during, and after projects, answering questions and building long-term relationships.
  • Coordinate with manufacturers, distributors, and subcontractors on equipment specifications, lead times, and compatibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in mission-critical, electrical, or facilities infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of UPS systems, batteries, power distribution, and precision cooling, ideally in systems under 500 kVA.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, one-line diagrams, and equipment submittals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to both customers and field technicians.
  • Comfortable traveling to job sites across Central Texas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with major UPS and cooling manufacturers such as Eaton, Schneider Electric/APC, Vertiv/Liebert, or similar.
  • EIT certification or progress toward a Texas PE license.
  • Familiarity with structured cabling or raised access floor systems.
  • Experience supporting quoting, estimating, or business development efforts.
